Drew Heredia said he and a friend were walking a small dog Dec. 30 when a pit bull jumped on the dog. The unidentified 12-year-old girl reportedly tried to save her dog, prompting the pit bull to turn on her. Heredia said he jumped on the pit bull and applied a choke hold that he learned while taking classes at a Brazilian jujitsu studio in southwest Bakersfield. "It was kind of a heart-pounding moment," Heredia said. "It was very scary." He said he held the dog for 20 minutes until an animal control officer arrived. “At first, I wanted to kick it, but then I thought it’s not a good idea, because it could get my leg,” Heredia said. http://www.bakersfieldnow.com/news/local/37069754.html

NEW ORLEANS — There were tears, anger and arrests outside of Our Lady of Good Counsel Church, where two people have been taken away in handcuffs after police moved in to remove the protesting parishioners
One of them is author and parishioner Poppy Z. Brite.
“I’m having a wonderful time,” Brite said as she was taken away in handcuffs. “I’m serving my church. I’m saving my church.”
"It was necessary for the police to break-in to Our Lady of Good Counsel because those inside refused entrance to either archdiocesan representatives or the police," said Sarah Comiskey, the spokeswoman for the Archdiocese.
Archdiocese officials showed up at Our Lady of Good Counsel Church at midmorning Tuesday. The officials said they were there to reclaim church property, with the parishioners inside asked to leave peacefully – otherwise, officials said, they would be arrested.
"It has always been the intention of the archdiocese to bring these vigils to a peaceful conclusion. This forced closure involving the NOPD is the result of the actions of protestors at the former parishes," said Comiskey.

William "Shorty" Cantlon (1904 Paris, Illinois – May 30, 1947 Indianapolis, Indiana) was an American racecar driver. He was killed on May 30, 1947, while racing in the 1947 Indianapolis 500 on lap 40 after swerving into the outside retaining wall to avoid the spinning car of Bill Holland, who recovered from the spin to finish second. Cantlon’s car was left resting against the wall until the end of the 200-lap race.

The V-16 Indy Car
1932 Miller V-16 Engine
The Big Eight rear wheel drive chassis built in 1931 were large enough (by design?) to accept the 303 V-16 and one was so used by Harry Miller. The engine out of the Miller-Cord L29 benefited from a few racing oriented changes including gear train drive to replace the crankwheel and eccentric shaft cam drive and relocation of the accessory drive. Shorty Canton drove it but managed only 27th place. This Miller Indy story ends here, however Harry came back in ’32, doing himself one better (at least in driven axles) with a four-wheel drive. He once again brought a new patron to the party.
