the hour they found conrad, i am told was around 2:00 to 2:30 am ; but i’m trying to confirm that

CHEMAINUS, B.C.–A family gathering to celebrate the opening of clam-digging season in a Vancouver Island aboriginal community turned tragic yesterday when a house exploded into flames in the early morning darkness, killing five people, including a young child. Gilbert Frenchy Jr., 22, said he lost three generations of family in the fire on the Chemainus First Nation reserve – his grandmother, aunt and niece. As flames quickly spread, an 8-year-old girl and a 47-year-old man scrambled out an upstairs window to safety and an 11-year-old boy fled through a basement door. "I was on the beach clam-digging, and I looked at the house and saw my auntie walk up to the basement door," Frenchy said softly. "She had a lantern, which she probably dropped or put it somewhere near heat and it exploded, which started the fire." He said he ran to the house, where he saw his uncle standing on the porch, frozen as flames shot to the sky.  Frenchy said his uncle couldn’t bear to leave family members of his family behind in the burning home. The names and ages of the victims were not immediately released. The fire’s heat with enough to destroy nearby vehicles and ignite trees. ………….con’t

"People were trying to pull the people out and the rest of us young guys had to hold people who tried to go in," he said. The fire occurred on the Chemainus reserve near Ladysmith, about 90 kilometres north of Victoria, at 2:30 a.m. yesterday. Two bodies had been recovered by yesterday afternoon and three people were still missing, said RCMP Const. Ed Power. "The house is completely gutted out," said Power. "To know that people did get out is quite surprising." The three people who escaped were taken to hospital. Their conditions weren’t known. Five would-be rescuers at the scene needed to be taken to hospital in Nanaimo.  "Three were treated for minor injuries and discharged. Two remain in critical condition," said Shannon Marshall of the Vancouver Island Health Authority.  http://www.thestar.com/News/Canada/article/571312

In the Second Messenian War, Sparta established itself as a local power in Peloponnesus and the rest of Greece. During the following centuries, Sparta’s reputation as a land-fighting force was unequaled.[18] In 480 BC a small force of Spartans, Thespians, and Thebans led by King Leonidas (approximately 300 were full Spartiates, 700 were Thespians, and 400 were Thebans; these numbers do not reflect casualties incurred prior to the final battle), made a legendary last stand at the Battle of Thermopylae against the massive Persian army, inflicting a very high casualty rate on the Persian forces before finally being encircled.[19] The superior weaponry, strategy, and bronze armor of the Greek hoplites and their phalanx again proved their worth one year later when Sparta assembled at full strength, and led a Greek alliance against the Persians at Plataea.    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sparta

FERNIE, B.C.–As many as eight people may be dead after an avalanche in the B.C. Interior buried 11 snowmobilers.  RCMP Cpl. Andy Veltmeyer confirmed eight people were buried under the snow.  Jennifer Henkes, a spokesperson with the Interior Health Authority, said there were some fatalities, but she couldn’t say how many people were killed.  "Interior Health would like to extend its deepest condolences to the victims’ families during this very difficult time for them in the Elk Valley," she said.  Three people were taken to hospital, Henkes said, with two discharged yesterday and one remaining in stable condition.  "We do have one survivor in the Elk Valley Hospital," she said. "That person is being kept overnight for observation."  The avalanche happened yesterday afternoon between Sparwood and Fernie in B.C.’s Elk Valley, about 300 kilometres southwest of Calgary.      http://www.thestar.com/news/canada/article/559047

(CNN) — A Southwest Airlines plane slid off a snow-covered taxiway Friday at Chicago Midway International Airport in Illinois, but no one was hurt, aviation officials said. A Federal Aviation Administration official said 98 people were aboard Flight 688, departing for Los Angeles, California. The plane became stuck in snow on the shoulder of the taxiway as it was heading to a runway, the Chicago Aviation Department said.

NOBLESVILLE, Ind. — Two houses were heavily damaged Tuesday morning when a work truck slammed into them in Noblesville.

No one was injured when the incident happened before 9 a.m. at 10th and Pleasant streets, but major work will have to be done to repair the damage, 6News’ Jennifer Carmack reported.  Police said the truck was southbound on 10th Street when the driver began swerving through traffic.  Investigators said the driver went onto a sidewalk and struck one of the houses before slamming into the second house, knocking it off its foundation.  Jake Hilton, who rents the first home that was hit, said he was glad that he wasn’t home when the crash happened.  "I’m just kind of shocked right now, I guess," Hilton said. "It’s not every day you get a truck driving through your living room."  An elderly couple next door was home when the crash happened, but they were in the back of the house, which was not damaged.  "It’s shocking, but it happens," said Steve Hall, grandson of the elderly couple. "It’s winter and they have to shut down the electricity and the water. They don’t know if the house is going to fall through."

ST. LOUIS (KMOV) — A 1 ½ year old, female German shepherd was found in the median of I-44 at Jefferson Avenue Monday morning.  After receiving a phone call, a humane officer rescued the dog.  The dog was found lying in the median scared and covered in ice. She was dehydrated and had sustained several abrasions.  The Humane Society staff has named the dog Isis.  Isis is now being treated by veterinarians and staff at the Humane Society’s Headquarters on Macklind Avenue. She has no identification tags or microchip.

is that like water boarding but a lot colder ;

Freezing/Hypothermia

The freezing / hypothermia experiments were conducted for the Nazi high command. The experiments were conducted on men to simulate the conditions the armies suffered on the Eastern Front. The German forces were ill prepared for the bitter cold. Thousands of German soldiers died of freezing or were debilitated by cold injuries. The experiments were conducted under the supervision of Dr. Sigmund Rascher at Birkenau, Dachau and Auschwitz . Dr. Rascher reported directly to Himmler. Dr. Rascher publicized the results of his freezing experiments at the 1942 medical conference entitled "Medical Problems Arising from Sea and Winter".  The freezing experiments were divided into two parts. First, to establish how long it would take to lower the body temperature to death and second how to best resuscitate the frozen victim.  The two main methods used to freeze the victim were to put the person in a icy vat of water or to put the victim outside naked in sub-zero temperatures.  The icy vat method proved to be the fastest way to drop the body temperature. The selections were made of young healthly Jews or Russians. They were usually stripped naked and prepared for the experiment. A insulated probe which measured the drop in the body temperature was inserted into the rectum. The probe was held in place by a expandable metal ring which was adjusted to open inside the rectum to hold the probe firmly in place. The victim was then placed in the vat of cold water and started to freeze. It was learned that most victims lost consciousness and died when the body temperature dropped to 25 C.  Two Russian men were seen by a prisoner doctor in the cold vat. They were very strong men and had said a comment to the SS doctor performing the experiment. The prisoner doctor was shocked at how long the Russian men could take the cold without loosing consciousness. He asked the directing doctor to take them out of the tank. He did not allow this and increased the temperature slightly to prolong their pain. They died after a long painful stay in the tank.  The second way to freeze a victim was to strap them to a stretcher and place them outside naked. The extreme winters of Auschwitz made a natural place for this experiment.  The resuscitation or warming experiments were just as cruel and painful as the freezing experiments.

Rv:9:1: And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven unto the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.
Rv:9:2: And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.
Rv:9:3: And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and unto them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.
Rv:9:4: And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men which have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
Rv:9:5: And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.
Rv:9:6: And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.
Rv:9:7: And the shapes of the locusts were like unto horses prepared unto battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.
Rv:9:8: And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.
Rv:9:9: And they had breastplates, as it were breastplates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.
Rv:9:10: And they had tails like unto scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.
Rv:9:11: And they had a king over them, which is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew tongue is Abaddon, but in the Greek tongue hath his name Apollyon.

The movie "Top Gun" was based on the Navy fighter pilot training program at the Miramar facility

The Marine Corps said the jet was returning to the Miramar field after performing landing training on a Navy aircraft carrier, and the pilot reported having trouble. The exact nature of the trouble was not known, the Marine Corps said, and an investigation was launched into the crash with the military having jurisdiction over the crash site. iReport.com: Smoke rises from fiery crash

Hourglass Field was the popular name for an auxiliary landing field operated by the United States Navy before and during World War II north of San Diego, California. It is remembered as a racetrack in the regional road racing circuit and because a crackdown on unauthorized drag racing there triggered a riot in San Diego.

Hourglass field was located just west of U.S. Route 395 (now Interstate 15), about three miles north of what is now MCAS Miramar. It was formally known as Linda Vista Mesa Field and, later, Navy Outlaying Field (NOLF) Miramar or Miramar Field / #01715 (OLF). The popular name comes from the layout of the airport’s runway system, which was a single piece of asphalt mostly in the shape of an hourglass.

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan – Security forces overran a militant camp on the outskirts of Pakistani Kashmir’s main city and seized an alleged mastermind of the attacks that shook India’s financial capital last week, two officials said Monday.

The raid was the first known response to demands by India and the United States that Pakistan targets the alleged perpetrators of the Mumbai attacks, which have sharply raised tensions between South Asia’s two nuclear-armed powers.

An o-ring, also known as a packing, or a toric joint, is a mechanical gasket in the shape of a torus; it is a loop of elastomer with a disc-shaped cross-section, designed to be seated in a groove and compressed during assembly between two or more parts, creating a seal at the interface.

The joint may be static, or (in some designs) have relative motion between the parts and the o-ring; rotating pump shafts and hydraulic cylinders, for example. Joints with motion usually require lubrication of the o-ring to reduce wear. This is typically accomplished with the fluid being sealed.

Fisherman Scott Curry reeled in the 20-pound fish on Buffalo Springs Lake and immediately noticed the catch had human-like teeth.
A game warden photographed the fish and is attempting to identify it.
General Manager of Buffalo Springs Lake Greg Thornton told KLBK13-TV in Texas that he has never seen anything like the fish in the 36 years he has lived near the lake.
A search for what the fish may be suggested that it may be a pacu, which is found in South America.
Curry said he believes he saw another similar fish while on the lake.
A Texas television station reported that lake officials will give $100 to anyone catching a similar fish

Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice says Iraq will be viewed as ‘strategic achievement.’

WASHINGTON (CNN) — Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Sunday took partial responsibility for the troubled occupation of Iraq, saying the government was not properly structured to handle the problems the United States faced after the overthrow of Saddam Hussein’s regime.  When asked by Fox News’ Chris Wallace if former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld had mismanaged the occupation in Iraq, Rice said the war started well but that it was a mistake not to give responsibility for the occupation solely to the military.  “I take responsibility for that, too,” she said. “We just didn’t have the right structure.”  Rice was President Bush’s national security adviser when the U.S. invaded Iraq in the spring of 2003 and was responsible for coordinating the activities of the Defense Department, the State Department and other national security agencies.  Rice, however, said she believes that the overthrow of Hussein would eventually be viewed as a “great strategic achievement” for the Bush administration and the United States.  “You now have a young democratic, multi-ethnic, multi-confessional Iraq that has just signed an historic agreement with the United States establishing a long-term relationship. … That’s a trade up,” she said.

The LIbrary Of Water Boarding and Other Evil Acts   Leave a comment

WASHINGTON (CNN) — It’s a position that John Quincy Adams once called downright pathetic: that of a former president.

As the days dwindle until President Bush joins what Herbert Hoover called the "most exclusive trade union in the world," the unpopular commander in chief appears decidedly enthusiastic about embracing a lower profile, recently declaring that he’s more than ready to forgo the limelight.

………………………………….con’t

Fundraising and planning for his presidential library, to be built on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, is well under way. The president has started interviews with high-profile journalists, by all accounts already trying to define his legacy.

………………………………….con’t

Bush, like several of his predecessors, is also likely to embark on the business of making money — and a lot of it — off his status as a former occupant of the White House.

The Clintons have made more than $100 million in the eight years since the curtain closed on their White House years, and Bush himself has said that his father earns $50,000 to $75,000 a speech.

To be sure, profiting from their White House years is a staple for modern ex-presidents: Gerald Ford capitalized on his accidental 2½-year presidency by sitting on the board of several major corporations, and Ronald Reagan caused a stir when he netted $2 million for a few brief speeches in Japan in 1989.

………………………………….con’t

This president’s low approval rating is overwhelmingly connected to Iraq. It will rise and fall depending what turns out to be the history of that country and that part of the world," said Stephen Hess, a former Eisenhower aide and a scholar at the conservative Brookings Institution. "That really is what his legacy for future historians is all about."
