HAPPY NEW YEAR ; ICE CUBE ANYONE ?

THE NICE THING ABOUT WINTER IS THAT IF THE BIRD POOPS ; IT IS USUALY FROZEN BY THE TIME IT HITS YOU ;

New Years Eve revellers around the GTA should bundle up tonight with a low of -14C expected, according to Environment Canada. "It’s a pretty cold night. The normal is -8C," said Environment Canada meteorologist Mitch Meredith. Fortunately the gusting winds, which have reached 50 km/h at Pearson Airport today, are expected to die down as 2009 approaches. "The wind will diminish rapidly and become nil by midnight," said Meredith. The City of Toronto has issued an extreme cold weather alert and activated extra services to help homeless people get off the street and into shelters for the night.   http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/article/560312

Several Arab countries have shelved New Year’s Eve celebrations in solidarity with Palestinians in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip who have suffered a fifth straight day of Israeli bombardment. Egypt, Jordan, Dubai and Syria have all cancelled festivities including concerts by popular Arab singers which had been billed for Wednesday night. Egypt’s state-owned Al-Ahram daily newspaper reported that official events planned for New Year’s Eve had been called off.

Two has many properties in mathematics.[1] An integer is called even if it is divisible by 2. For integers written in a numeral system based on an even number, such as decimal and hexadecimal, divisibility by 2 is easily tested by merely looking at the one’s place digit. If it is even, then the whole number is even. In particular, when written in the decimal system, all multiples of 2 will end in 0, 2, 4, 6, or 8.  Two is the smallest and the first prime number, and the only even one[2] (for this reason it is sometimes humorously called "the oddest prime"[3]). The next prime is three. Two and three are the only two consecutive prime numbers. 2 is the first Sophie Germain prime, the first factorial prime, the first Lucas prime, and the first Smarandache-Wellin prime. It is an Eisenstein prime with no imaginary part and real part of the form 3n − 1. It is also a Stern prime, a Pell number, and a Markov number, appearing in infinitely many solutions to the Markov Diophantine equation involving odd-indexed Pell numbers.

Two also has the unique property that 2+2 = 2·2 = 2²=2↑↑2=2↑↑↑2, and so on, no matter how high the operation is.

Two is the only number x such that the sum of the reciprocals of the powers of x equals itself. In symbols:

"zero" and "cipher" are both names for the number 0, shared in various forms across several languages. They are doublets, in fact sharing the same root in Arabic "صفر" (which transliterates as "sifr"). Via Italian this became "zefiro" and thence "zero" in modern English, French, and Italian. But via Spanish it became "cifra" and thence "cifre" in Old French and "cipher" in modern English (and "chiffre" in modern French).[1]  The two are thus in fact the same word, and the differentiation between them is one of habit rather than of any intrinsic difference between the twain. "zero" is more commonly used in mathematics and science, whereas "cipher" is a more connotative word. One may refer to a person as being a "social cipher", but would name them "Mr. Zero", for example.[1]   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Names_for_the_number_0

doublets or etymological twins

In etymology, two or more words in the same language are called doublets or etymological twins (or possibly triplets, etc.) when they have the same etymological root but have entered the language through different routes. Because the relationship between words that have the same root and the same meaning is fairly obvious, the term is mostly used to characterize pairs of words that have diverged in meaning, at times making their shared root a point of irony. For example English pyre and fire are doublets. Subtle differences in the resulting modern words contribute to the richness of the English language, as indicated by the doublets frail and fragile (which share the Latin root, fragilis): one might refer to a fragile tea cup and a frail old woman, but a frail tea cup and fragile old woman are subtly different and possibly confusing descriptions.

Nine is a composite number, its proper divisors being 1 and 3. It is 3 times 3 and hence the third square number. 9 is a Motzkin number. It is the first composite lucky number. Nine is the highest single-digit number in the decimal system. It is the second non-unitary square prime of the form (p2) and the first that is odd. All subsequent squares of this form are odd. It has a unique aliquot sum 4 which is itself a square prime. 9 is; and can be, the only square prime with an aliquot sum of the same form. The aliquot sequence of 9 has 5 members (9,4,3,1,0) this number being the second composite member of the 3-aliquot tree.

There are nine Heegner numbers.[1] Since , 9 is an exponential factorial. 8 and 9 form a Ruth-Aaron pair under the second definition that counts repeated prime factors as often as they occur. A polygon with nine sides is called an enneagon (technically) or nonagon (in common usage).[2] A group of nine of anything is called an ennead. In base 10 a number is evenly divisible by nine if and only if its digital root is 9.[3] That is, if you multiply nine by any whole number (except zero), and repeatedly add the digits of the answer until it is just one digit, you will end up with nine:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Number_9

This works regardless of the number of digits that are transposed. For example, the largest transposition of 35967930 is 99765330 (all digits in descending order) and its smallest transposition is 03356799 (all digits in ascending order); subtracting pairs of these numbers produces:

  • 99765330-35967930 = 63797400; 6+3+7+9+7+4+0+0 = 36, 3+6 = 9.
  • 99765330-03356799 = 96408531; 9+6+4+0+8+5+3+1 = 36.
  • 35967930-03356799 = 32611131; 3+2+6+1+1+1+3+1 = 18, 1+8 = 9.

Manna (sometimes or archaically spelt mana), (Hebrew: מָ‏ן) is the name of a food which, according to the Bible, was eaten by the Israelites during their travels in the desert; until they reached Canaan, the Israelites are implied by some passages in the Bible to have eaten only manna during their desert sojourn,[1] despite the availability of milk and meat from the livestock with which they traveled, and the references to provisions of fine flour, oil, and meat, in later parts of the journey’s narrative.[2] The manna is also briefly mentioned in the Qur’an, with the Sura of the Cow,[3] Sura of the Heights,[4] and Sura of the Flattening,[5] mentioning the divine supply of manna as one of the miracles with which the Israelites were favoured; these passages only describe manna as being good things which have been provided … as sustenance.[6]   http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manna

the description in the Book of Exodus, manna is described as appearing each morning after the dew had gone,[7] while in the description in the Book of Numbers, manna arrived with the dew during the night;[8] the Book of Exodus adds that manna was comparable to hoarfrost in size,[9] and similarly had to be collected before it was melted by the heat of the sun.[10] According to the Book of Exodus in the Biblical, manna is described as being white "like coriander seed" in colour,[11] while the Book of Numbers describes it as being the same colour as bdellium.[12] According to the Book of Numbers, the Israelites ground it up and pounded it into cakes, which were then baked, resulting in something that tasted like olive oil;[13] the Book of Exodus states that it tasted like wafers that had been made with honey.[11] The Israelites were instructed to only eat the manna they had gathered for each day, for leftovers or storing any up for the following day resulted in manna that "bred worms and stank".[14] The exception to this occurrence was the day before the Sabbath when twice the amount of manna was gathered, which did not spoil overnight.[15]

Textual scholars view the two descriptions of manna as deriving from different sources, with the description in the Book of Numbers being from the Jahwist text, and the description in the Book of Exodus being from the later Priestly Source.[16][

What do a pink millipede, an electric ray named after a vacuum cleaner, and a deadly snake have in common? All were new animal species discovered last year.   In May, the International Institute for Species Exploration (IISE) at Arizona State University reported that almost 17,000 new species of animals, plants, and microbes were discovered in 2007.  Biology professor Daphne Fautin was part of the international team of taxonomists – scientists who study and classify organisms – who helped assemble the list of new species. "People are amazed when they learn that so many animals and plants are discovered each year," said Dr. Fautin, by phone from her office at the University of Kansas.   Admittedly, she adds, many are tiny, nearly invisible bacteria and microbes that aren’t exactly what the average person might call "exciting." So she helped the IISE produce a Top 10 list of the most interesting new species, hoping to raise awareness about the earth’s fragile environment and the struggle of other species to survive.   "While we are finding many new species, a lot more are disappearing faster than we can discover them. Many are gone forever and we will never know that they ever existed," said Dr. Fautin.   Included on the list was an electric ray, discovered off the coast of South Africa. Partly because the animal’s feeding technique involves vigorously sucking food off the ocean floor, it was named Electrolux addisoni, after the well-known brand of Electrolux vacuum cleaners.

(CNN) — Estimates for the amount of thick sludge that gushed from a Tennessee coal plant this week have tripled to more than a billion gallons, as cleanup crews try to remove the goop from homes and railroads and halt its oozing into an adjacent river. The sludge, a byproduct of the ash from coal combustion, was contained at a retention site at the Tennessee Valley Authority’s power plant in Kingston, about 40 miles east of Knoxville. The retention wall breached early Monday, sending the sludge downhill and damaging 15 homes. All the residents were evacuated, and three homes were deemed uninhabitable, according to the TVA. TVA’s initial estimate for the spill was 1.8 million cubic yards or more than 360 million gallons of sludge. By Friday, the estimate reached 5.4 million cubic yards or more than 1 billion gallons — enough to fill 1,660 Olympic-size swimming pools. Environmental advocates say the ash contains concentrated levels of mercury and arsenic. The plant sits on a tributary of the Tennessee River called the Clinch River. At least 300 acres of land has been coated by the sludge — a bigger area than the Exxon Valdez oil spill.

shiver me timbers ; were is all the ice gone   4 comments

CNN) — Between 1.5 trillion and 2 trillion tons of ice in Greenland, Antarctica and Alaska has melted at an accelerating rate since 2003, according to NASA scientists, in the latest signs of what they say is global warming.

Using new satellite technology that measures changes in mass in mountain glaciers and ice sheets, NASA geophysicist Scott Luthcke concluded that the losses amounted to enough water to fill the Chesapeake Bay 21 times."The ice tells us in a very real way how the climate is changing," said Luthcke, who will present his findings this week at the American Geophysical Union conference in San Francisco, California.NASA’s Gravity Recovery and Climate Experiment, or GRACE, mission uses two orbiting satellites to measure the "mass balance" of a glacier, or the net annual difference between ice accumulation and ice loss.

Shiver my timbers (usually pronounced "shiver me timbers") is an exclamation in the form of a mock oath usually attributed to the speech of pirates in works of fiction. It is employed as a literary device by authors to express shock, surprise or annoyance. The phrase is based on real nautical slang and is a reference to the timbers, which are the wooden support frames of a sailing ship. In heavy seas, ships would be lifted up and pounded down so hard as to "shiver" the timbers, startling the sailors. Such an exclamation was meant to convey a feeling of fear and awe, similar to, "Well Blow Me Down!", or, "May God Strike Me Dead". Shiver is also reminiscent of the splintering of a ship’s timbers in battle – splinter wounds were a common form of battle injury on wooden ships (‘shiver’ means splinter in some English dialects).

the anglican church symbol above and below

The name "Anglican" means "of England", but the Anglican church exists worldwide. It began in the sixth century in England, when Pope Gregory the Great sent St. Augustine to Britain to bring a more disciplined Apostolic succession to the Celtic Christians. The Anglican Church evolved as part of the Roman church, but the Celtic influence was folded back into the Roman portion of the church in many ways, perhaps most notably by Charlemagne’s tutor Aidan. The Anglican church was spread worldwide first by English colonization and then by English-speaking missionaries.

The Anglican church, although it has apostolic succession, is separate from the Roman church. The history of Christianity has produced numerous notable separations. In 1054 came the first major split from Roman administration of the church, when the Eastern Orthodox church and the Roman split apart.

The conflict of authority in England between church and state certainly dates back to the arrival of Augustine, and has simmered for many centuries. The murder of Thomas a Becket   http://www.anglican.org/history/beckett.html   was one of the more famous episodes of this conflict. The Magna Carta,  http://www.anglican.org/history/magnacarta.html  signed by King John in 1215, contains 63 points; the very first point  http://www.anglican.org/history/magnacarta.html#First   is a declaration that the English church is independent of its government..

Discontent with Roman administration of the church.

The beginning of the sixteenth century showed significant discontent with the Roman church. Martin Luther’s famous 95 Theses http://www.iclnet.org/pub/resources/text/wittenberg/wittenberg-luther.html#sw-95  were nailed to the door of the church in Wittenburg in 1517, and news of this challenge had certainly reached England when, 20 years later, the Anglican branch of the church formally challenged the authority of Rome. Henry VIII dissolved the monasteries and abbeys in 1536.

There is a public perception, especially in the United States, that Henry VIII created the Anglican church in anger over the Pope’s refusal to grant his divorce, but the historical record indicates that Henry spent most of his reign challenging the authority of Rome, and that the divorce issue was just one of a series of acts that collectively split the English church from the Roman church in much the same way that the Orthodox church had split off five hundred years before.

Defining the new church

The newly-separated Anglican church was given some formal structure in 1562 during the reign of Elizabeth I. That structure is not a management process or governing organization. What binds us together is not common administration but shared tradition and shared belief. Our belief is written down in the Holy Bible and the Articles of Religion; our tradition is in part embodied in our Book of Common Prayer. The first Book of Common Prayer was produced in 1549. In it the Latin liturgy was radically simplified and translated into English, and for the first time a single ‘use’ was enforced throughout England. It has been revised numerous times since then, the most significant revision being the first, in 1552. All revisions since then, before the modern era, were very conservative revisions. The 1662 English Book of Common Prayer http://www.eskimo.com/~lhowell/bcp1662/forms   the historical basis for most Anglican liturgy around the world. While several countries have their own prayer books, all borrow heavily from the English tradition rooted in Cranmer’s original work.

Further Information

Church history has been an important part of the cultural history of every nation, and through the centuries thousands of books have been written about it. Every library and every encyclopedia will cover it to some degree. An informative online starting point for learning more about the history of the Anglican Church is The Anglican Timeline, http://justus.anglican.org/resources/timeline/produced   by the American physician Ed Friedlander, MD. It lists several hundred notable events in the history of the Anglican church, with large numbers of links to reference materials and primary sources.

 Lutheranism
In 395 Augustine became bishop of Hippo in North Africa. His writings about the church and about salvation have been important ever since. In 1490 a Swiss printer began to print a new edition of Augustine’s works (it took 16 years to complete). A new study of Augustine influenced many in the church. Martin Luther was one of them. Luther was a monk in the Augustinian order and a lecturer in theology at the University of Wittenberg. His lectures on Psalms and Romans led him to a new understanding of justification by faith. In 1517 he nailed 95 Theses to the door of the church in Wittenberg, inviting others to debate matters which he thought should be changed in the church.
Luther’s protest was not only about abuses in the church. He was driven by the great idea that people were justified by God through faith because of God’s grace. He had learned this idea from Augustine and the Bible.
Luther was later excommunicated by the Pope. Many Germans and others followed Luther and a movement of reform spread across northern Europe.
Luther and some of the secular leaders of Germany issued a Protestation in 1529 affirming their reforming beliefs. From then on they were called “Protestants”.
Luther did not reform everything in the old church. He was not worried by images. He thought transubstantiation was wrong, but believed in a real spiritual presence of Christ in the Communion (a view that was different to that of Calvin, Cranmer and Zwingli). He thought clergy should be permitted to marry.
