GAZA CITY (CNN) — Hamas militants fired dozens of rockets into southern Israel on Monday despite a 10-day Israeli military campaign that reportedly has left more than 500 Palestinians dead.
Neither Israel nor the Hamas leaders in Gaza showed any sign of considering a cease-fire in the face of continuing international pressure to do so. "I can understand the eagerness of the international community to see the return to calm," Israeli Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni told European foreign ministers in Jerusalem. "This is our dream as well. This is what we are looking for. Unfortunately, there are those who cannot accept the idea of living in peace in this region." Abu Obeida, a spokesman for Hamas’ military wing, warned Israel that Izzedine al Qassam Brigades will continue rocket strikes "for many months" and vowed to strike deeper into Israeli territory. He spoke on Hamas’ Al-Aqsa TV. http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/meast/01/05/israel.gaza/index.html

GUATEMALA CITY, Guatemala (CNN) — The death toll from a landslide in Guatemala grew to 33 people Monday afternoon, with up to 60 still missing, a rescue official said. A landslide in the same area in northwest Guatemala killed two people December 14. Six people were injured in Sunday’s landslide, which blocked nearly one mile of road between Chicaman and San Cristobal Verapaz, said Hugo Arbizu, spokesman for the national disaster agency. The tragedy occurred when travelers got out of a truck Sunday and started to walk across a path below the part of the road blocked by the previous landslide, Arbizu told CNN. Around 11:30 a.m., more than 10 tons of dirt and rock fell on them. After the previous landslide, geologists declared that stretch of road a high-risk area, and nearby residents reported hearing occasional rumblings. Any type of travel over that segment had been prohibited, Arbizu said. http://www.cnn.com/2009/WORLD/americas/01/05/guatemala.landslide/index.html

RELIGIOUS / HISTORY UPDATE
Ali Hoseyni Khamene’i (help·info) (??? ????? ????????, born 17 July 1939), also known as Ali Khamenei,[4] is an Iranian politician and cleric. He has been Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989 and before that was president of Iran from 1981 to 1989. He has been described as one of only three people having "defining influences" on the Islamic Republic of Iran.[5][6] Born to an Iranian Azeri[7] family in Mashhad,[8][4] Ali Khamenei began religious studies before completing elementary education. The son of a cleric,[9] he is second eldest of eight children, and two of his brothers are also clerics. His younger brother, Hadi Khamenei, is a notable newspaper editor and cleric.[10] He attended religious studies classes at the rudimentary and advanced levels in the hawza of Mashhad, under his mentors such as Haj Sheikh Hashem Qazvini, and Ayatollah Milani, and then went to Najaf in 1957.[11] After a short stay he left Najaf to Mashhad, and in 1958 he settled in Qom. Khamenei attended the classes of Ayatollahs Husain Borujerdi and Ruhollah Khomeini. Later, he was involved in the Islamic activities of 1963 which led to his arrest in the city of Birjand, in Southern Khorasan Province. Shortly thereafter, he was released and resumed teaching in Mashhad’s religious schools and mosques, teaching the Nahj al-Balagheh.[11
Iran is home to one of the world’s oldest continuous major civilizations, with historical and urban settlements dating back to 4000 BC.[13][14][15] The Iranian Medes unified Iran into a kingdom in 625 BC.[2] They were succeeded by three Iranian Empires, the Achaemenids, Parthians and Sassanids, which governed Iran for more than 1000 years.
