Patriarch Alexy II   Leave a comment

Russian Orthodox Church Patriarch Alexy II

MOSCOW (AP) — The Russian Orthodox Church says its Patriarch Alexy II has died

The church says the 79-year-old died at his residence outside Moscow on Friday. It did not give the cause of death, but the patriarch had long suffered from a heart ailment.

The outspoken patriarch had led the world’s biggest Orthodox church since 1990, presiding over a flock that by most estimates numbers two-thirds of Russia’s population of 142 million.

Patriarch Alexius has, acknowledged that compromises were made with the Soviet government by bishops of the Moscow Patriarchate, himself included, and publicly repented of these compromises:

"Defending one thing, it was necessary to give somewhere else. Were there any other organizations, or any other people among those who had to carry responsibility not only for themselves but for thousands of other fates, who in those years in the Soviet Union were not compelled to act likewise? Before those people, however, to whom the compromises, silence, forced passivity or expressions of loyalty permitted by the leaders of the church in those years caused pain, before these people, and not only before God, I ask forgiveness, understanding and prayers.

FORGIVENESS IS GENEROUS UNTO G"D TO HE WHO ASKS FOR FORGIVENESS AND UNTO THOSE HE SEES FIT TO GIVE IT TO  ; YOU ARE FORGIVEN IN GRACE AND IN FAITH ; GO IN PEACE, AND FIND PEACE, FOR PEACE IS WITH YOU, IN CHRIST JESUS  ;  GRACE UNTO G’D IS GIVEN AND RECEIVED IN FAITH  ;  RSAC ;

Opposition to homosexuality

Patriarch Alexius II has repeatedly affirmed the traditional stand that the Orthodox Church has always taken and opposed the display of homosexuality in Russia, and in particular, has opposed gay parades in Moscow and St. Petersburg. The Church, according to the Patriarch, "has invariably supported the institution of the family and condemns untraditional relations, seeing them as a vicious deviation from God-given human nature". He also said, "I am convinced that gays’ desire to organize a parade in Moscow will not help strengthen the family as the foundation of a strong state".[40] Alexius sparked further controversy in October 2007 when he called homosexuality an illness and a distortion of the human personality like kleptomania.[41][42] The Orthodox Church "believes homosexuality to be a sinful distortion of human nature, which is overcome by spiritual effort leading to the healing and personal growth of the individual. Homosexual desires, just as other passions torturing fallen man, are healed by the Sacraments, prayer, fasting, repentance, reading of Holy Scriptures and patristic writings, as well as Christian fellowship with believers who are ready to give spiritual support. While treating people with homosexual inclinations with pastoral responsibility, the Church is resolutely against the attempts to present this sinful tendency as a "norm" and even something to be proud of and emulate. This is why the Church denounces any propaganda of homosexuality. Without denying anybody the fundamental rights to life, respect for personal dignity and participation in public affairs, the Church, however, believes that those who propagate the homosexual way of life should not be admitted to educational and other work with children and youth, nor to occupy superior posts in the army and reformatories."[

Today’s Verse:
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith; who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.

This picture of the face of Jesus of Nazareth appeared miraculously when photographs were taken of the return of a chalice to the tabernacle of a Spanish church which had been pillaged during the Spanish civil war (1936-39).

And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many shall come in my name, saying, I am [Christ]; and the time draweth near: go ye not therefore after them. (Luke 21:8)

Archbishop of Canterbury’s New Year message – God ‘doesn’t do waste’

By this stage of the holiday season, I imagine you might be looking with dismay at your overflowing rubbish bin, or the mountain of debris piling up outside your back door. Food, drink, presents they all come with more and more packaging. Even the most eco-conscious of us is likely to have a bit of a bad conscience after Christmas. The full text of the message may be found here.

The message is also available on youtube

Archbishop of York’s Sunday Mirror column ‘Long To Reign Over Us’

This week the Queen became Britains oldest ever Monarch. When she was born it was not thought that Princess Elizabeth might become Queen. However the abdication of Edward VIII in 1936 led to the enthronement of Elizabeths father George VI, whose death in 1952 led to the ascension of Queen Elizabeth II. The full article may be found here.

University chaplains are giving master classes in social cohesion, say faith groups

A major report commissioned by the Church of England and supported by many of the main faith communities in the UK offers a tutorial in the valuable work of university and college chaplains up and down the country. It calls on Higher Education Institutions and the government to continue to invest in chaplaincies to help them further their significant contribution to social cohesion, at a time when 43 per cent of young people in England and Wales have experienced higher education. Dioceses consulted on housing assistance for retired clergy

The Church of England is to consult dioceses and individuals on how it can best support retired clergy in need of housing assistance after a life of service to the church, as in recent years house price growth has outstripped the increase in average earnings. Details here.
